The Sundown Audio Zv5 has been and true pillar and contender in the SPL subwoofer market for a while now. Its overall popularity in the car audio market is unparalleled, this is why we thought it would be a good idea to take a look at the Zv5 and the up-coming Zv6 and discuss the differences between the two. So, let’s get to it.

The Zv5 is one of Sundown Audio’s ever-popular “ultra-high excursion” subwoofers. It is the big brother of the other popular subwoofer line, the X series. The X series is Sundown Audio’s first foray into the larger surround, higher-excursion subwoofer game, which has become somewhat of a trademark for Sundown. But, we’re not here to talk about the X series, so what makes the Zv5 so popular?

First, let’s take a look at the overall design and construction of the Zv5. The Zv5 features a motor structure with triple stacked magnets that measure a little over 9” in diameter, and over 4” tall. The subwoofer has a hyper-extended pole allowing the cone to travel over 4” peak-to-peak before the coil bottoms out. The Zv5 also features beefed-up top and bottom plates to help support the motor structure during the magnetic throw of the sub.

The Zv5’s voice coil is nothing to take lightly either. The 3” 4-layer flat-wound aluminum coil propels the cone to levels of excursion unmatched by any subwoofer in this class. The coil construction also allows this subwoofer to handle 2000 watts RMS, conservatively, making it a beast for SPL lanes and daily abuse.

So what makes the Sundown Audio Zv6 different from the Zv5? Well, from what I understand, a couple of very important things. First, reports are saying that the Zv6 will have an increased power handling rating of 2500 watts RMS. That’s a 20% increase in power handling over the Zv5. And being designed and built by Sundown Audio, you know the Zv6 will be able to handle clean power over that rating.

In order for the Zv6 to accomplish this bump in power handling, the new iteration on the Z series will now feature a quad-stacked motor structure with a thicker top plate, increasing its magnetic force on the voice coil. Speaking of voice coils, the Zv6 gets an upgrade here, too. The Zv6 will now come standard with an 8-layer voice coil. A huge difference over the typical 4-layer coil used in the Zv5. You put all of these upgrades together, and you have a Z series subwoofer that will be hard to compete with, in any arena.

In the description, from Sundown Audio, “the Z series subwoofer was built from the ground up to become the new standard in the low-frequency / small ported subwoofer category in this price range.” No matter the version, the Z series is definitely a subwoofer that provides the low-end, musically, that car audio enthusiasts crave within their setups.
